Do you like West Africa? Do you like human rights? Do you like cross-cultural observations, stupid puns and foolhardy women with hearts of gold? Well, this might be the place for you.

dance party at nicole's
I stayed at my colleague Nicole's house in Tamale. There are some kids who live next door who come around quite often for sachets of water, bites of their food, and borrow Nicole's bike. Although the house sometimes resents the lack of privacy, it also has its benefits - including the potential for spontaneous dance parties, set to the background of Malian traditional music. The little girls in these photos were teaching us a dance that appears in both Mali and Ghana that involves making a circle, meeting your counterpart in the middle and...bumping butts. The last photo is my favorite from my time in Ghana.
